An evening of celebration for the past four years and the legacy they leave for the future: one major sustainability programme for the city of Thessaloniki - LABattoir; and a wonderful publication - call to action titled “How to you do!”.
“How to you do!” aims to open up new possibilities and, to that end, includes a deck of more than 100 cards with ideas and promptings, aiming to motivate the user to change her everyday life, action and interaction in the city. The content has been generously contributed by 36 art and culture professionals who were involved in Artecitya Thessaloniki since the beginning - and we owe our gratitude to them. The publication is designed by Anja Lutz and Dimitris Koliadimas. The publication title and the initial brainstorming on the possible format and content are the result of a workshop led by the two experts with the participation of young creatives from various fields, in partnership with the project LABattoir by the Municipality of Thessaloniki. The publication user is encouraged to use the cards for daily inspiration, write on them, share them, pass them around.
Also, in the week before the closing event, artist Theodoros Zafeiropoulos worked on his installation in progress “Homeland”, initiated in 2015 as part of the first large-scale project of the Artecitya Thessaloniki Agency, “Goethe’s Dream”. “Homeland” brings citizens of all social groups in contact with the primal and symbolic materiality of the soil. During specially designed workshops, participants offer soil samples from the place they call home, which are then moulded and casted into the 4.500 recesses of the wall that divides Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki and the Fοlklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia-Thrace. The soil’s heterogeneous colour shades, condensed in the wall’s recesses, compose a gigantic mosaic in earth tones, while the wall’s transformation into a topographic map is used as a vehicle between the metaphysics of “dedication” and physical “mortal” substance, between the spiritual and the material. The site-specific installation has been developed throughout Artecitya through workshops with schools and adults and will continue developing until the 4.500 wall recesses have been filled. People around the world are still invited to donate soil samples.
